EXPEDITIONS


TO THESSALONIKI and NORTHEN GREECEChurch in village Pili, 1283. From a postcard


We enlarge our knowledge how Constantinople culture lived in forms of ancient Russie.
For this goal we made a
research expedition to Greek city Thessaloniki.

It was seen sights, which appeared in the Roman Christian epoch.
The sights has been photo fixed. Between them mosaics and frescos, churches and cathedrals, town walls and towers of Thessaloniki, monasteries of Halkidiki and Meteora, the small church in village Pili.
The examples of church painting of the Byzantine period are before you.

It was chosen a route for our new excursion “To Thessaloniki, to treasures of Byzantium”.

Our thanks to the embassy of Greece in Moscow for an appointment with professor Mr.
Anthony-Emil TACHIAOS, historian in Orthodox church, who studied at famous Anton V.Kartashev.
It took place in Museum of Byzantine Culture an
acquaintance with director Dr.Anastasia TOURTA and its unique collection.
Also our thanks a lot Dr.Anastasia TOURTA and archeologist of the museum
Mrs. Maria Polychronaki for their kindness to fulfill for us a research of two cooper coins with pictures of Roman imperious.
A coin of Manuel II Komnenos, dated in 1160-64. The emperor standing, holding scepter and globus cruciger. Around the inscription ΜΑΝOYΗΛ ΔΕ C ΠΟΤΗ  On the obverse it represents the Virgin enthroned. Letters MP A follis of Justin II, dated in 569/70.
On the obverse: the emperor and his wife Sophia enthroned and all round the inscription “DN IVSTINVS PPAVC”
The price M (=40 noummia = 1 follis) is inscribed in the center, at left ANNO (year), below - the mint mark CON (Constantinople)  

The coins have been lovely gifted us by our traveller professor Vasily Novoseltsev.

• for colleagues – teachers to write expressions in a new article,
• for students to wide a panorama of monuments of Byzantine culture,
• to
fascinate the next time our tourists by marvelous beauty of ancient art
